'A well-structured book, with good balance between depiction of character and development of plot' - Criminologist
The Revelationists, flocking to organize in rural Shillingham, are a secretive bunch.
They are taking over the village with their extreme religious mantra, and seem to be reaching a cult-like status.
Detective Chief Inspector David Webb is instinctively suspicious of the group, so when one of his police officers, Nina Petrie, offers to investigate undercover, he agrees.
But Detective Inspector Petrie soon finds herself being sucked in...
Could the apocalyptic message the sect is preaching be based on reality? Or are they using illegal means to dupe their followers?
When a wine merchant is found murdered in his hotel room the plot thickens.
And Webb's attention quickly shifts to the discovery of the dead man.
Who was he, and who were the mysterious couple he was last seen with?
Even after his identity has been established, there appears to be no motive for his murder…
Did he have anything to do with the Revelationists?
Or was his death at the same as The Gospel Makers increasing popularity just a coincidence...?
The Gospel Makers is a thrilling English village murder mystery. It is the eleventh book in the best-selling DCI Webb series.
Praise for Anthea Fraser
‘Ms Fraser is her dependable elegant, guileful self, withholding the killer's identity till a dying fall’ - Sunday Times
‘Anthea Fraser is a worthy follower of the traditional whodunit system...The plot is sustained throughout, and her artistic detective who literally "draws conclusions" is an original character.' - Sunderland Echo
‘DCI Webb is a refreshing reminder that the English "cozy" mystery does not have to be run by an aging spinster with a handful of knitting needles or a pedantical peer with a private income.’ — Mystery Scene
Anthea Fraser has written all her life but did not begin to take it seriously until after marriage, when she found herself at home with two small daughters and embarked on a correspondence course with the London School of Journalism. She wrote short stories before turning to novels of the supernatural, and then to crime. Her novels include The Seven Stars, The Ten Commandments, Death Speaks Softly and Pretty Maids All in a Row.
The Gospel Makers DCI Webb Mystery Book 11 eBook Anthea Fraser
There are no spoilers in this review, although the Editorial review pretty much covered everything. I have been a longtime reader of Anthea Fraser books, getting them from the library in the 1990s. I am sure we can all look back to the lead-up to the clocks ticking over to 0000, and that planes would fall out of the sky as computer systems round the world crashed. Microsoft sent out CDs with 'patches', and computer technicians worked frantically to try to stabilise systems. Cults sprang up (mainly originating in America) and many people were sucked into selling their homes and giving all their money to the cults. And then, of course, nothing happened - I wonder what happened to those poor deluded people? This story follows that line (as the Editorial said), but there are more sinister undertones and what is scary is how easily people can be pulled into cults and be controlled by them. This book is well written and researched and also well edited, as are all this author's books, and a pleasure to read with no jarring typos or wrongly-used words to detract from the story.
Four stars for me is high praise, five stars are reserved for truly exceptional books.

The Gospel Makers DCI Webb Mystery Book 11 eBook Anthea Fraser Reviews
An easy read - light but enjoyable.
Started off being a bit boring, then, suddenly, it got really exciting. Then it was the end. Enjoyed it, though.
Ditto
I liked this book from the beginning. Sadly it bordered the shortcomings of some sects we hear of today. How easy it is to convert, and brainwash, but all in all a good read
I've read a number of Anthea Fraser's books. I like British mysteries and hers often have twists and turns that the traditional mystery writers don't. I also like DCI Webb. I thought this was a good read.
Not really my cup of tea, but just okay. Too much navel gazing on the part of many of the characters.
Mom read this one - no complaints - she must have liked it. She prefers cowboy romantic comedy novels.
