A Voyage to Terra Australis — Volume 1 By Matthew Flinders

A Voyage to Terra Australis Volume 1 Matthew Flinders 9781546987871 Books

I first learned about Matthew Flinders when I was in Australia on a business trip and had some weekend hours to kill in Melbourne. I stumbled into a traveling museum exhibit about Matthew Flinders and have been a big fan ever since.

Flinders only lived into his early 40s, spent almost 8 years of his adult life in French custody in Mauritius and still managed to create charts of the previously uncharted Australian coast that were used by allied navies in WWII.

This book is one of two volumes that were published right around the time of Flinders's death. Ironically the title was forced upon him by his publishers. He was the first man to call the continent 'Australia" and wanted to use the name in the title.

Flinders was also the first person to use the name "Great Barrier Reef"

This book is full of navigational details and describes the process through which he accomplished his cartographic feats. I found it most enjoyable when I had modern day electronic charts open on my computer while I had this book open on my Kindle. Comparing the modern day positions of islands, reefs and passes with the positions Flinders established was very enlightening. His positions were extremely accurate. He did his work using celestial navigation, without a chronometer, and that really drives home the magnitude of his accomplishment.

Another excellent book is "The life of Captain Matthew Flinders" by Earnest Scott. Scott was a University professor in Melbourne in the early 20th century and wrote several excellent books on early Australian exploration by the British and the French. I think I got the Scott book on Guterberg.

There is also a novelized version of Flinders' life by Earnestine Hill called "My Love Must Wait". It dwells on the isolation that Flinders' and his wife endured during his long trips to Australia and his incarceration in Mauritius.

An interesting side note is that Flinders' daughter and had a son long after Flinders had died. The British navy had refused to give any sort of pension to Flinder's widow despite his accomplishments and contributions. Two Australian cities were so appalled by this that they put together an endowment for a pension for Flinder's daughter and she used it to educate his grandson who went on to become one of the most famous of the British Egyptologists in the 19th century. If you google Matthew Flinders you will probably get several references to his grandson.

Good quality for a good price.
I was a little disappointed that maps were not included but they are easily found on the internet.
Thanks for your service.
I have read this many times over as i know the areas well, being a seaman of many years experience. Mathew Flinders was amazing person and his acheivments incredible with the vessel and equipment of his era.
It is a very good book and gives excellent insight into the early exploration of the south of Australia
Totally satisfied with prompt and accurate delivery. Pretty dry reading, just a diary/journal.
I have now read both Vol 1, and Vol.2.
I am fortunate in that I own a original facsimile copy of both volumes published by Stateprint in 1990. It also includes Flinders charts. the second volume covers Flinders last voyages after circumnavigating Australia and his subsequent arrest and internment by the French governor in Mauritius (De Caen) and the efforts made by other people to secure his release. The two volumes together with the charts are essential to get an understanding of the early days of exploration and conditions prevailing in the early days of settlement in Terra Australia or what Flinders termed Australia. Both volumes are essential to get a complete understanding of the final discovery of Australia.
